In truth, The Great Disobedience, if not quite the ‘turgid’ piece rejected by the judges, is over-burdened by an ideological conviction that prison is, in a quite literal and identifiable way, a by-product of capitalism. It is a melodrama in which character is seen as a social construct, and the psyche assaulted by the implacable and vindictive agents of industry. At its centre is Victor Matthews, once a compensation doctor employed by a rubber company. He had become an inconvenience to a company that expected him to offer a professional vindication for its refusal to accept liability for its actions.

The tapes of these interviews still exist and once again reveal his fascination with the racial situation in the south. He recorded interviews in particular with a group of black workers who had been employed to prepare the new shipyards but who now found themselves excluded from the well-paid craft jobs. Further interviews included those with women, mostly black, seventeen weeks into a strike with a local shirtmanufacturing company. He was especially entranced by the protest songs they had composed and which they sang with a mournful beauty he still recalled sixty years later.
