A more natural classification based on wild plants proposed by Sleumer was adopted by Cullen and Chamberlain, of the Edinburgh Botanical Garden, as the basis for a complete reassessment of the genus Rhododendron. This work is still in progress and depends heavily upon the cytology, anatomy, and phytochemistry of the genus. Results are published as they become available. The 1980 Royal Horticultural Society Rhododendron Handbook presented the old Balfourian system along with the new Cullen and Chamberlain revision, of the Edinburgh Botanical Garden, as the basis for a complete reassessment of the genus Rhododendron together with a third classification.
