Huffaker, P. S. The role played by natural enemies has likewise been subject to debate. We hope here to cast light on both questions, and to place the action of enemies, both endemic and introduced ones, as discussed at length in other chapters of this book, in perspective relative to natural control as a general phenomenon.

These latter features can be visualized as the refuge aspect of damping mechanisms. Griffiths thus illustrated through simulation modeling that superparasitism (indirect interference) and lack of perfect temporal or spatial coincidence (synchronization) may serve as intrinsic damping features. , independent of host density or parasite density. However, when discrimination occurs they noted that the value of k, the negative binomial exponent, which describes the distribution of attacks among hosts, increases as more and more attacks are generated.

HUFFAKER, P. S. MESSENGER, AND PAUL DEBACH hosts is dependent only upon its searching capacity, which is considered a constant for the species; the host or prey population is considered as held at such low densities that satiation of appetite (predator) or exhaustion of the egg supply (parasite) would not be a factor. , to their density (Fig. 2a). The percentage killed is then constant (Fig. 2b). , Morris, 1963) is best represented by the disc equation of Holling (1959); numbers killed increase, but at a progressively reduced rate, as prey density increases, while the percentage killed declines, but less precipitously than under the Thompson conception.
